It used to be that the well to do drove executive sedans – the bigger the better. That’s not the case nowadays. The big spenders want something with a high ride height and ample room for golfing equipment in the back. But, a traditional SUV is too utilitarian, too blue collar. That’s why they are snapping up luxury crossovers, like the Lexus RX.
HISTORY OF THE LEXUS RX
First Generation RX (1999-2003)
The first generation Lexus RX was introduced to the United States in 1999. It was Lexus’s first attempt at an SUV stateside, and it was a success. Under the hood was a 3.0L 6-cylinder backed by a four-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive was standard with all-wheel drive available. It featured a unibody chassis topped off with an egg-shaped body. Inside, there were plenty of high quality materials and creature comforts.
Second Generation RX (2004-2008)
Model year 2004 introduced the second generation RX and the new 3.3L 6-cylinder engine pair with a 5-speed automatic. A hybrid model also became available later on in the design cycle. Outside, the RX dropped its egg-shape look for a more modern, edgy appearance. Lots of standard features got added to the RX including eight airbags, Vehicle Stability Control and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Adaptive Front-lighting System and a backup camera (w/navigation system) were optional.
Third Generation RX (2009-2015)
Just when RX fans thought things couldn’t get any better, Lexus revealed the third generation RX. The latest incarnation was available with a new 3.5L 6-cylinder engine along with a 6-speed automatic. Later in the design cycle, an 8-speed automatic as well as a CVT transmission would also be offered. In 2013, the RX received a refresh. Changes included a revised exterior, a new power lift gate and iPod/USB audio interface. A new F Sport package with special styling cues also became available.
The Lexus RX might not be the only luxury crossover SUV on the road, but it is certainly one of the best. It features all of the amenities you could desire, paired with Lexus reliability and performance.
