There is no other car like the Corvette by Chevrolet. Sure, Dodge has tried to compete by offering the Viper, and Ford has the GT, but neither of those vehicles provides the balance of the Corvette. The Corvette is an all American sports car with incredible performance at an affordable price.
History of the Chevy Corvette
The Corvette was originally introduced as a show car for the Motorama display at the New York Auto Show. It drew so much attention that it was released as a production model in 1953. The Corvette started out as a sporty coupe powered by an inline 6-cylinder engine, but quickly morphed into a thundering, 8-cylinder sports car.
Seventh Generation Corvette (2014 – present)
The seventh, and most current, generation Corvette was introduced in 2014. The Stingray nameplate was resurrected from past generation Vettes, but everything else was brand new.
There are two Corvette Stingrays available for the 2014 model year: coupe and convertible. The coupe weighs less, but the convertible allows for open air driving (and subsequent bad hair days). There are two trim levels: base and Z51. There are also three sub-trim levels including 1Lt, 2LT and 3Lt.
Probably the most important aspect of a Corvette is the engine. With the 2015 Stingray, GM engineers did not disappoint. Under the Corvette’s long, sloped hood is a 6.2L 8-cylinder engine producing 455 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Opt for the optional dual-mode exhaust and that number climbs to 460 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. The engines feature a host of new technologies including direct fuel injection, variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation. Transmission choices include either a seven-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic.
Chevrolet counts on a good portion of Corvette owners driving like maniacs, so safety is important. For 2014, the Vette gets antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, side-impact airbags, Onstar and a rearview camera.
Previous generation Corvettes have been accused of having a cheap interior. For 2014, GM addressed this issue with quality materials throughout. There is also the addition of an 8-inch touchscreen display with MyLink electronics interface, and a customizable display in the gauge cluster. The coupe also has a larger cargo area than any of its predecessors.
There are a lore of innovations American can be proud of – the light bulb, the hot dog, and of course, the Corvette. Nothing makes you more proud to be an American than leaving tire marks on the pavement in a nearly 500 hp rocket.
